Aubusson rug, French Aubusson rug
The evolution of the French Aubusson rug enjoyed a rich and significant history in central France for about 200 years and growing out of the arts of the Renaissance. The fine designs were produced and reserved for kings and royal residences. Traditional Aubussons were delicate, pastel colored and with a central floral medallion surrounded by natural or geometric motifs.
Contemporary Aubusson rug production continues today in China, India, Pakistan and Iran, and the original motif has evolved into modern colors and more traditional looks. Some continue to use wool but many replicas are also constructed of synthetics.
