Unlike an oriental rug, or pile rug, the design on a kilim rug is created by interweaving the different colored warps and wefts. Creating the pattern in this way produces a flatweave rug. Many kilim are also reversible rugs due to the nature of their construction. True kilim have been produced in Turkey, Iran, the Caucasus, the Balkans and nearby geographic regions, often times to be used as prayer rugs.
