Tibetan rugs, Tibetan area rugs
For centuries, Tibetans have been weaving carpets for various purposes, such as for bedding, saddle blankets, and meditation mats in monasteries. When in the early 1960s thousands of Tibetans settled in the Kathmandu Valley after having made the long trek through the Himalayan Mountains due to political turmoil they turned to their centuries old art of carpet weaving as an economic sanctuary. With the help of the Swiss government a cottage industry of carpet weaving began. Over the next few decades the small cottage industry grew into Nepalís second leading industry. Today, Tibetan rugs can be found throughout Europe and the U.S. in a variety of sizes and designs.
