Construction refers to how a rug is made. The construction can make a great difference in the appearance of the rug such as a hooked rug versus a tufted rug and how the rug’s texture complements the “feel” of the room. The construction will also affect the quality, durability and longevity of the rug.

There are generally two methods to producing rugs. They are machine-made or hand-made. Machine-made area rugs are available in both natural and synthetic fibers while handmade area rugs are almost always constructed using natural materials such as wool.

Almost all manufacturers produce machine-made rugs. Many of them, also, manufacture tufted rugs.

Tufted rugs follow next in the number of manufacturers. Tufted rugs are usually referred to as “hand-made” which is a misnomer because it is stretching the truth. Tufted rugs can be manufactured by machine or by “hand” meaning the hand holding a fiber-injecting apparatus. They are not hand-knotted whereas the hand-knotted are vastly more durable and unique with many being considered as works of art.

Then there are other manufacturing methods that produce braided, hooked and knitted rugs among others. These manufacturing methods account for a very small percentage of the market. They are very unique in appearance and consumers feel they add a “homier” feeling to the room.
